‘At the epicentre of the whole fiasco were my parents, and what got lost in the chaos was me.’
On the eve of her eighteenth birthday, Vidhie Mukerjea returned home from school, excited to celebrate with friends and family. Only to walk into a house filled with cops. She watched on as her mother was arrested for an unspeakable crime. Four months later, her father was locked up as well.
As Vidhie grappled with her new reality, the media ruthlessly covered the case and dissected her every move. She was portrayed as a devil’s child by society, the press and—ultimately—it was how she began to view herself.
Where does an eighteen-year-old me go from here, she wondered. Where does my family go from here?
Devil’s Daughter is the brutally frank memoir of an isolated, rebellious young woman and her journey towards overcoming the blame and shame cast upon her. And how she was able to cultivate a profound appreciation for the beauty this world has to offer—in the face of an ugliness no one should know.

Devil’s Daughter is an interesting title – how did you choose it, and why?
Devil’s Daughter is most definitely an interesting title. In conversation with my partner this name came up and I absolutely fell in love with it. Many people would assume I’m referring to my mother. I felt it reflected how I was viewed by everyone at the time. However, the devil here refers to the law, the society I came from, strangers, so called friends, the media and ultimately it was how I began viewing myself. The title is so deep, beautiful and creative to me, once the true meaning is understood. I like complex things, I myself am a very complex person and this title reflects that.
What were things that helped you fight depression and anxiety, a general advice that you wish to share with people dealing with difficult times/ situations.
When most people face anxiety or depression, they instantly look for relief in external things. Whether it be friends, a therapy or medication. I did, too. I had my fair share of distractions, constantly looking for a relief for my pain. The day I started getting better was when I really spent time by myself. It was one of the hardest things to do as, for me, it kept getting worse until the day it finally got better. The best advice I have to give is to work at knowing yourself, understanding the true meaning of solitude and essentially becoming friends with your demons. Anxiety will never leave, it’ll always try coming back to you. Just keep trying to understand yourself better so you have control.
This is a story of resilience, your journey through fear, anxiety and depression. What are the 3 things that have changed in Vidhie from yesterday to today?
1. The first is definitely learning empathy. It’s so crucial and important to understand people and their struggles. Practicing empathy is such an integral part of my life today. 2: Solitude is a luxury, I crave alone time now, and that’s when I’m my best self. 3: Unapologetically embodying my weird and unique self. I had to develop the courage to follow my intuition, even in the face of ridicule, and I was better for it in the end.
What message do you want to give your readers through this book?
As simple as it sounds, just persevere and live through the tough times. Never let a crisis pass you by. Leverage it as an opportunity and learn from the unfortunate moments. What got me through, even in these adverse circumstances I was faced with, was being able to see the beauty that people and this world have to offer. Having faith in yourself allows you to have faith in others.
